12 Steps to becoming a Change Maker

Mahatma Gandhi- Be the change you wish to see in the world

Thinking about the last 12 months how much change did you experience?

Whether it was positive change, like a promotion or finding your life partner, or maybe you experienced loss or redundancy, I am guessing you experienced a fair amount.

  • What if you could lead change in your work and life, rather than having to succumb to it?
  • What if you were responsible for your own transformation?
  • What if you could be adaptable enough to surf the waves of change rather than be overwhelmed by them?

This year I am sharing with you the things that change makers do and the qualities that they have. We can all be change makers!

Each month I will provide a blog with tips and resources, I’ll also have some video, audio and challenges that you can participate in throughout the year. Also look out for events, such as retreats and panel discussions and don’t forget to invite me into your organisation to provide a talk, or programme bespoke to your needs

  • What if you could lead change in your work and life, rather than having to succumb to it?
  • What if you were responsible for your own transformation?
  • What if you could be adaptable enough to surf the waves of change rather than be overwhelmed by them?

Some of the change makers that stood out for me in 2018 were:

  • Activist Tarana Burke who started the #MeToo Movement, a movement against sexual harassment and assault.
  • Adam Neuman founder of WeWork, a global company that has created shared workspaces for startup companies.
  • Jacinda Ardern the first female President of New Zealand, who also had a baby whilst in post

All were breaking down barriers, pioneering and leading change in a positive way.

In 2019 I am sharing with you the things that change makers do and the qualities that they have. We can all be change makers!

Each month I will provide a blog with tips and resources, I’ll also have some video, audio and 30 day challenges that you can participate in throughout the year. Also look out for events, such as retreats and panel discussions and don’t forget to invite me into your organisation to provide a talk, or programme bespoke to your needs!

January: Self-Awareness & Confidence: The Chinese PhilospherLao Tzu is quoted as saying ‘He who knows others is wise. He who knows himself is enlightened’ Knowing yourself is key to achieving any goal and working towards it, but you also need to be confident enough to take action. It all starts with you. This month I share my tips to become a more confident you!

February: Earning Respect:  Have you met those people who seem to throw their weight around because of their job title? It might get things done but it doesn’t earn respect.Demonstrating integrity in your words and in your actions, as well as showing how you make a positive impact is essential to earning respect. Change makers develop good respectful relationships in the workplace; I will share with you 10 ways to do just that.

March: Dare to dream: What don’t you dare to dream about? To make real change you need courage otherwise nothing happens. Change-makers dare to be vulnerable and ask for help when they can’t do it on their own. They take responsibility for their own action and show who they are without being arrogant. They dare to make mistakes and fix them if necessary. The theme for this years International Women’s Day is “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”, only those who dare to dream can achieve that. I’ll showcase some women who have done so.

April: Skillful Reciprocity: The more you give the more you gain is one of my mottos. Making connections and finding ways to help those connections is a change maker’s superpower. By helping others, you create a bond and trust that by doing good things you will be rewarded eventually. It might not necessarily be by the person themselves but could be through their network. I’ll show you how to master reciprocity.

May: Coaching Approach: Coaches are skilled at helping others to find direction, create their own ideas and answers. They serve others without having to be the expert in everything; they aim to unleash the best in people. Even if you are not a trained coach, a coaching approach can be used to facilitate change and transformation take place. I’ll share with you some quick and easy coaching techniques to use to facilitate change.

June: Curiosity: Change-makers are curious, they want to know how the world works and explore it. This is an important characteristic because if you never wonder why something works the way it does it can never be improved. I share with you five ways to become more curious and how that can benefit your career or business.

July: Creativity: Creativity can be finding creative solutions to problems and also in the form of art and culture. Change-makers often seek people like themselves that are open to new ideas, quickly understand what they mean and know how to change these ideas into concrete actions. I share our top tips and tools for cultivating creativity.

August: Communication skills: Change-makers often have good people skills; they fit into different networks but manage to stay being themselves. This makes them fascinating but also hard to figure out because you can’t put them in a box.  I uncover the skills that underpin being good with people.

September: Flexibility: Change makers don’t fight change but embrace it. They are open to suggestions and feedback on their own ideas and are not afraid that someone will steal their idea. Because they believe in it’s purpose whether they achieve it or someone else. By combining your knowledge and resources together you can make the idea even better. Learn how to be open minded and flexible with our seven strategies.

October: Authenticity: Change makers work is an extension of their personality. They work from their own qualities and that is their strength. They are being their authentic selves. Is it possible to be authentic in an organization that doesn’t align with your values, or when you need to please clients and may disagree? I’ll share with you what everyone gets wrong about authenticity.

November: Doers: Change-makers don’t believe in years of planning but in trial and error. They start immediately even if they don’t know what it will look like, this flexibility makes it possible to adapt and to change. Sadly procrastination often rears its head and can stop doers in their tracks, I’ll share with you some strategies to leave procrastination behind.

December: Positive: Change-makers have a positive attitude. They see the beauty in the world and have a positive vision and believe in a bright future. They don’t see problems but instead see possibilities.  I’ll share some top tips in creating a positive workplace.
